Edition of the "Bruderklausen-Spiel" of Sarnen (1601)

Edition

The Bruderklausen-Spiel of Sarnen was written 1601 by the priest of Sarnen (CH), Johann Zurflüe. He himself was the director of his play which was performed on the market place of Sarnen on 16th and 17th September 1601. The manuscript is an autograph and consists of 11.370 verses. It is being preserved in the cantonal archive of Obwalden, yet has never been edited and is therefore not known to the public nor to research.

The editing project will be coordinated by Elke Huwiler, University of Amsterdam, and Heidy Greco-Kaufmann, University of Berne. The edition is planned to be published within the scope of the 600th anniversary of Niklaus von Flüe's birthyear, which will be celebrated in 2017.

Niklaus von Flüe

Niklaus von Flüe was born in the canton of Obwalden in central Switzerland in 1417 and died there in 1487. He was canonized by the Catholic church in 1947. He is considered to be the patron saint of all Swiss people. During a crisis of the Swiss cantons in the 15th century, it is said that his counsel prevented the Swiss Confederation to fall apart. His life and legend therefore have both a religious and a political dimension.
